Bad Behavior for Joomla

April 5th, 2007 by Michael Hampton

I just received word that someone has ported Bad Behavior to the Joomla content management system.

And even though I hate Joomla and think anybody who’s running it is out of their minds, even they should have some protection from link spam. At least until I get around to releasing my Escape from Mambo script so they can migrate away from it…

Since I haven’t tried it I can’t vouch for the software, but I can at least point you to Bad Behavior for Joomla and you can probably figure it out from there. Let me know how it works for you.

Michael – you crack me up! Now, when you write Joomla! do not forget the exclamation point! ;-)

Thanks for your Bad Behavior – it saved me TONS of spam on my WordPress site – we are using it with our move to our group blog site in Drupal and I will use it now (yea!) on my Joomla! sites.

    Bad Behavior rocks! :)

I remember checking into that CMS back when I was looking to move away from Monaural Jerk. I wasn’t what you’d call impressed, and nothing since then has swayed my opinion much. Still, as you say, everybody deserves some measure of protection from the spammers.

Should I get the time and enough of an urge to scratch this particular itch, I’ll see if I can make the generic protection work with Gallery2 (and maybe SMF)…

I’d also like to thank Michael for his work on BB and the port to Joomla! that’s now happened.

The mambot (plugin) catches all spammers based on their HTTP requests. You don’t have to port it to SMF, you just install it and the whole site is protected

Sorry, I was mistakenly reading TSMF instead of SMF. Oops…

    What’s wrong with Joomla?

I know it’s not perfect, but there is a lot of hard work that goes into it by the developers and the word “hate” is very strong.

Is it because of security issues?

I don’t understand, they seem to be growing more and more and as they do, development will follow.

Personnally, i think joomla! sucks because it creates a 20+ database tables for what most people will use it most: small, a little bit dynamic websites. Also, it does a bad job at separating style, behaviour and content (css, js, html). most of the plugins spit out table-design pages and other prehistorical html garbage.

    but hey, it’s free, right?

Joomla! however bad it is as per your opinion, lets newbies to put content on websites in various ways. Create news, articles, polls, integrate images, classified ads, forums, advertisements and what not.

Also integrate all those with common login which does not require to build bridges for everything around the globe.

You are saying that using it is being ‘out of the minds’ ? Before stopping people from using so useful, why not give any alternative ? What to use if not use Joomla!

Like ‘Bad Behavior’ they are also into public service.

I am considering Joomla! for a build. Would appreciate if ssnobben would clarify the statement…

“Well check out the new Joomla 1.5 rc2 nothing of this is not true at all!”

Are you saying the new beta does no better in these areas listed below the comment or instead that it has improved in these areas?

@ Curious1: ssnobben can’t clarify it because it is patently untrue.

..thing is with me is my ISP doesn’t support anything other than Joomla, and you can’t actually install things like “drupal” because of the way there servers are setup, the damn thing cant be confugured, or its to big to extract on there server due to there 60sec extraction timeout limmiter.

The upside is, joomla is indeed simple, and does the job for me, AND because my ISP support it 100% if I have any coding dificalties or “security” issues, my ISP’s techies are more than happy to take a look and solve the issue for me.

Bad behavior is fab BTW, except for the “../bad-behavior/post.inc.php on line 39″ message I get pop up from time to time when I post my forum.

Seems that the Port over forgot the DB Table – Reason – for Banning, looking at a 900 entry list for a ecommerce site I have the port running on and cant determine why 3/4 of them are listed.

The ones I can have a User Agent I recognize name as being bad/suspisious but the ones I want to know about list nodda for a reaseon.

Also Error logs are full of:
Trying to get property of non-object in mambots/system/bad-behavior/bad-behavior-joomla.php on line 119

I aint no PHP guru so anyone else getting similar Errors? It’s not jsut one site, have it on a few and same error (two sepreate servers) 1 phpv4 1 phpv5

    Nothing wrong with Joomla!
been using it for more than a year…
Simple, easy, and effective for what I want it to do. Beats building a site from scratch :-)

I found Joomla to be too complicated to serve as an initial CMS for my clients, who are complete newbies. Turned back to WordPress, that they found difficult enough, yet they’re working with it, of course using Bad Behavior.
    May try Joomla later.

    Hello folks.

    I have only one question.

My web is all new, and just soon about to gather members. This spam bot, where will I find reports? Probably stupid question..:P But all the same, I need an answeer.

For the hate joomla subject, maybe he just do not like that you can build a portal in under a week. Look at my website. It is not finished, some bugs and stuf to work on. But what is there has come up in little under 6 days. Joomla is so easy..
